Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
What is therapy, and how does it work?
Therapy is a dedicated space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors in a safe, supportive environment. It helps by teaching you new ways to cope with challenges and providing a place to talk with someone who isn’t directly part of your personal life; someone who meets you where you are and helps hold you accountable to your personal goals.
What kinds of issues do you help with?
I work with clients on a variety of concerns, but most of the clients I see struggle with anxiety, depression, low self-worth, stress management, and boundary issues. I specialize in women’s mental health, such as navigating perinatal mental health, perimenopause, and menopause. However, I’ve also worked with a broad range of clients over the years. Together, we’ll address the challenges you’re facing and build the tools you need moving forward.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or not quite yourself, therapy can help you gain clarity and develop strategies to move forward. You don’t need to hit rock bottom to benefit—therapy is for anyone who wants to grow and improve their well-being. Whether you’re dealing with life transitions, stress management, or emotional challenges, I can help you find a path forward.
What happens in the first session?
Our first session is all about getting to know each other. We’ll talk about your goals, concerns, and hopes for therapy, and we’ll review the client history sheet from your paperwork. This can take some pressure off, so you’re not left wondering “What do I say in my first session?” It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and make sure I’m a good fit for you.
How long does therapy take?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people come for a few months to tackle a specific issue, like stress management or relationship concerns—while others choose to stay longer for ongoing growth and support. We’ll work together to figure out what feels right for you. It’s always your choice to continue or to terminate therapy whenever you feel ready.
What if I don’t feel comfortable with you?
Feeling comfortable with your mental health counselor is crucial. If you don’t feel like we’re a good match, let me know. I’m happy to adjust my approach or, if needed, help you find someone who’s better suited to your needs. I have a network of trusted colleagues I can refer you to.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. What we discuss in therapy stays between us, with a few legal exceptions. I’ll explain these in detail during our first session. I know it can feel especially sensitive in a rural area, but I take confidentiality very seriously, and we’ll talk about what that looks like for your situation.
What if I’m nervous about starting therapy?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous! Starting therapy is a big step, and I’ll do what I can to make the process comfortable. From the very first call, you’ll be talking to me directly—your mental health counselor—and we’ll proceed at a pace that feels right for you.
How much does therapy cost, and do you accept insurance?
I’m happy to discuss fees and payment options with you directly if you reach out. I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, as well as, Cigna insurance. I will also provide superbills for out-of-network insurance reimbursement if that’s an option you’d like to explore. Additionally, if you’re interested in online therapy, let me know—many clients find it more convenient for busy schedules or if they’re located in remote areas.
